Prosthodontics is the speciality of dentistry pertaining to rehabilitation of oral health of people with missing teeth or oral and facial structures. Prosthesis refers to any artificial substitute used for replacement of missing teeth or oro-facial structures. This branch of dentistry is a unique blend of science, art and creativity and aims at restoring patient’s oral health to as normal and natural as possible.

Department of Prosthodontics is a centre of excellence with highly qualified and dedicated faculty members. Academic programme of Prosthodontics encompasses undergraduate course (all five years) and postgraduate course of three years covering fixed prosthodontics, removable prosthodontics, Implantology and maxillofacial prosthodontics. Besides this department also offers fellowship programme in Implant Prosthodontics and diploma course in dental mechanics.

The students undergo didactic enlightenment, practical training aimed at developing digital dexterity and clinical acumen.

A well equipped dental lab with state of art dental equipments is attached to the department which enables the students and consultants to provide quality dental care to patients at affordable prices.

Oral Medicine, Diagnosis & Radiology

Oral medicine is a specialty within dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis and management of complex diagnostic and medical disorders affecting the mouth and jaws. As oral health is an integral part of the overall health, the specialty of Oral Medicine aims to manage various oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland disorders, facial pain syndromes, as well as cater to the dental treatment needs for patients with complicating medical diseases. The acumen of Maxillofacial radiology deals with the acquisition and interpretation of imaging carried out to diagnose the conditions affecting the maxillofacial region.

The Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, with its team of highly experienced and qualified faculty members, caters to the academic programs at the Undergraduate (5 years) as well as Post-graduate (3 years) levels. The students are trained to promote excellence in patient care, education and research in the field of Oral Medicine. There is a special segment of the clinic dedicated to Oral Cancer and Pre-cancer, where patients chronically habituated to tobacco, betel-nut chewing etc are evaluated for early signs of oral cancer, and thorough counseling for cessation of the habit and appropriate measures for improving the quality of life are taken. The Radiology department, with state-of-art infrastructure such as Radiovisiography, Digital Panoramic as well as extra-oral equipments, plays a significant role in the radio-diagnosis of oral and paraoral diseases, thereby guiding treatments suitably.

Catering to patient needs by promoting the access to quality and cost-effective expertise in Oral Medicine care, thereby promoting optimal health continues to be the core focus of the Department.

Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry

Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry is a specialty that deals with comprehensive oral health care for children and adolescents; including preventive measures.

The responsibility of the department is to impart knowledge to students in a number of important aspects of pediatric dentistry; that will help them to treat the young members of our society i.e. Children in a confident yet compassionate manner. This department also renders state of art, all kind of specialty treatment to child patients; including children with special health care needs. Treatment is also carried out under conscious sedation and general anesthesia for indicated child patient.

The department has well trained and highly qualified faculty members who can teach & train students, the basics and advanced developments in dentistry; which helps them to provide best preventive and curative treatment to our patients. We follow a variety of teaching methods like lectures which involves audio-visual aids, demonstrations, practical, pre-clinical guidance to clinical management. We also guide the undergraduate, postgraduate and fellowship students to give them enough confidence to handle difficult and challenging situations which will make them better clinicians and academicians in their future journey.

Department of Maxillofacial surgery is only speciality which bridges dentistry to fundamentals of medicine. The department treats vast variety of cases from simple tooth extraction to complex major and supramajor surgeries.

The responsibility of the dept is to impart knowledge to student in various aspect of oral and maxillofacial surgery which will help them to treat the patient in a confident and compassionate manner. Our staff member are trained to teach and impart skills to the students which help them to provide best treatment to patients.

We follow a variety of teaching methods like lectures which involves audiovisuals aids demonstration, practical and clinical guidance. We maintain strict decorum and follow the rules of completing the syllabus given by DCI and MUHS.

Public Health Dentistry

HOD’s Desk (Overview):

Department of Public Health Dentistry aims to develop proficiency in community diagnosis, assessment of oral health needs, developing and planning strategies to provide oral health services at the doorstep of rural & under privileged section of the community through organized community effort.

The department offers comprehensive oral health screening, oral health prevention, treatment & referral to specialized departments for advanced treatment. Customized programmes like AIDS awareness program, Anti-Tobacco campaigns, WHO day, World Oral Hygiene Day are observed & conducted on relevant days specified by WHO.

Our department conduct outreach programmes to reach rural population, where we conduct oral health education & promotion, provide preventive & curative services. “Mobile dental unit” is being used to provide such treatment to needy population residing at a distance from our hospital. Voluntary Health Organisations, NGO’s, Charity Foundation, Education Institutions request our department for conducting oral screening & treatment camps.

The principle of our department is to make oral health care available, accessible, appropriate and acceptable. Department attempts relentlessly to harmonize & integrate teaching-learning activities with community service.

The Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics is one of the largest and busiest department in SMBT Dental College. It handles the specialties like Dental Materials, Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics.

We teach and train students in a number of important aspects; which are areas where dentists in private dentistry spend most of their time. Hence our major responsibility is to continue to train students in these aspects of dentistry. Our staff members are well trained professionals who can teach & train students the basics and latest developments in dentistry. We supervise & guide them to use the techniques with which, one can do a lot for complete oral health and satisfaction of our patients. We follow a variety of teaching methods like lectures which involves audio visual techs, demonstrations, practical pre-clinical guidance to clinical management. We strictly follow the rule of completing the syllabi given by DCI as well as MUHS. In addition, we train the interns to give them enough confidence to handle difficult and challenging clinical situations which they will master by the end of internship.
